EMDR therapy: heal the memories your body hasn't let go of
When a memory still hijacks your body years later — the racing heart, the dread, the flinch — it's not a weakness. It's an unprocessed wound. EMDR helps your brain finally file it as the past, so it stops living in your present.
EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is one of the most researched trauma treatments in the world, recommended by the VA and the World Health Organization. When something overwhelming happens, the brain can't always process it, so it gets "stuck," frozen with all its original images, beliefs, and body sensations intact. That's why a trigger can throw you right back into it. Using gentle, guided bilateral stimulation — often side-to-side eye movements or taps — EMDR helps your brain reprocess the memory so it loses its grip. You don't forget what happened. It just stops feeling like it's happening now.
What is EMDR therapy?
WHAT EMDR CAN HELP WITH
EMDR is highly effective for PTSD, single-incident trauma (accidents, assault, loss), childhood and complex trauma, anxiety, panic, and the disturbing memories that won't fade on their own. It's especially helpful when you know something is "still in there" but talking about it hasn't been enough to move it.
What it's like in session
You're always in control. We spend real time building safety and steadying tools before we ever approach a hard memory, and you never have to tell me every detail to do this work. During reprocessing, I'll guide you through brief sets of eye movements or taps while you simply notice what comes up. Many people describe it as tiring but relieving — like setting down a weight they'd carried so long they forgot it wasn't part of them. And it works just as effectively over secure video, from your own space.
My approach to EMDR
I'm an EMDR Certified therapist — meaning I've gone beyond the basic training most clinicians stop at, completing advanced consultation and demonstrating real proficiency in this work. With 15+ years in complex trauma, I adapt EMDR carefully for clients whose trauma is layered, blending it with IFS and Brainspotting so the pace always stays safe for your nervous system.
EMDR Certified Therapist — an advanced credential beyond standard EMDR training
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Are you a certified EMDR therapist?
Yes — I'm EMDR Certified, an advanced credential beyond the standard training most therapists have, requiring additional consultation and demonstrated skill.
Does EMDR really work online?
Yes. Virtual EMDR is well-researched and effective — we use on-screen visual cues or self-tapping, and many clients feel safer doing this work from home
Will I have to talk about every detail?
No. One of EMDR's strengths is that you can heal a memory without recounting all of it out loud. You stay in control of what you share.
How long does EMDR take?
It varies. A single-incident trauma can resolve in a handful of sessions; complex trauma takes longer. We'll find the right pace for you together.
